ALMATY

A week on and I still wish I was back in Almaty learning more about the city, feasting on Kazakh food and discovering more of the changing landscapes. Almaty is green and beautiful city. Surrounded by mountains and has a special energetic vibe. I was invited to attend Visa Fashion Week Almaty with the aim of shedding light on new designers from the east.

VISA FASHION WEEK ALMATY: STREETSTYLE.

This season’s Visa Fashion Week Almaty organised by CEO Bauyrzhan Shadibekov was a huge success despite the pandemic setbacks. I arrived just in time before the government increased restrictions for international tourists.

Multitalented designer Saken Zhaksybaev was the first to showcase his label ZhSaken at VFW Almaty. His presented monochromatic dresses with accents of yellow, showing off inspiration from Spanish and Portuguese heritage.

Lilia Litkovskaya presented for the first time at Almaty. I’ve known Lilia for over 5+ year and I’ve always wanted to attend one of her shows. Most of her looks drew inspiration from vast poppy seed fields and her optimistic view of the future. Some of her latest pieces were also styled on the streets of Almaty by Lidiya Dossalina and Gigi.

Uzbekistan had two designers representing them. Lali Fazylova showed her use of traditional Uzbek textiles and royal velvet weaving techniques. Dildora Kasimova used her mantra of fashion being a holistic lifestyle to capture the modern-day Silk Road zeitgeist.
